Not included in the flats-for-land scheme to ensure it remains 100% ownership of the Greek-Rum Community.

In the summer of 2015, the Greek Orthodox Community of Stavrodromi received the official permit from the urban planning department and the relevant services for the launch of building operations for the construction of a new building, the “Huzur” building in the district of Dolapdere. In specific, the permit was issued on 13 July 2016 by the Directorate for Monuments, following an extensive waiting period and thanks to the persistence, patience and efforts of our Commission.
We consider this to be a great success, since it is well known that the privately owned plot where the Huzur will be built was characterised as seized property (mazbut) till recently and was returned to us in 2011, as a result of action taken by our Community.

Said plot has an area of 228.61 sq.m. and is located in the district of Dolapdere, in great proximity to the church of Agios Konstantinos. The completion of the building is the result of Community’s efforts, which started with the renovation and design of Agios Konstantinos’s school building as a guest house complex for accommodating our fellow citizens, students coming from Greece, visiting professors etc.
Note that the technical support for this project will be provided on voluntary basis (for free) by architects of the Greek-Rum Community.

Construction costs are estimated to about 2,000,000 TL, an amount that can be covered to a large extent by our community and partly by our collaboration with other Greek-Rum Community Foundations of the community. Besides, to this end we have presented our plans initially to Rumvader Association for the Support of Greek Community Foundation, followed by two presentations at the seats of the communities of Megalo Revma (Arnavutköy) and Agios Dimitrios Kurtuluş. In addition to the relevant Boards of Directors, these presentations were also attended by the Boards of Agios Fokas Arnavutkoy, Virgin Evangelistria Propodon Kurtuluş, the Central Girls' School of Agia Fotini, the Church of the Twelve Apostles Feriköy, Agios Georgios and the Ascension Bakirkoy, Agios Georgios Yenikoy, Holy Transfiguration Kandilli and Kadikoy.

After the briefing and negotiations were completed, the Communities that responded to our call was those of Agios Dimitrios Kurtulus and Virgin Evangelistria Propodon Kurtulus. The participation of these two communities in the construction project of the “Huzur” building makes our goal fully feasible and we can announce with certainty that the building will indeed be built and the full ownership thereof will remain in the hands of the Greek-Rum Community.

Besides, our intention was for the building to be constructed funded in full by our own resources - rather than be included in a flats-for-land scheme with some contractor, as is the norm for major projects - ensuring that it will remain in full ownership of the Greek-Rum Community, a goal that was finally achieved.

The Greek Orthodox Community of Stavrodromi is very pleased with the above developments, which once again show that the collaboration and common understanding among Communities for the greater good of the Greek-Rum Community can bear great fruit. We thank and congratulate the parish commissioners of Agios Dimitrios Kurtulus and Virgin Evangelistria Propodon Kurtulus for their trust and positive decision.

We hope to repeat and expand the collaboration with these two communities and will continue to seek collaboration with the rest. There are many areas where we can work together and our purpose is one and common: the welfare and greater good of the Greek-Rums of Istanbul.
