A few words about the School
The location where the Zografeion Lyceum currently operates, in 1845 accommodated the “Isodia Parish School” of the Greek Orthodox Community of Stavrodromi in two wooden houses, which was later renamed as “Parish School of Panagia”. Over time, this school building deteriorated to an extent that it posed a serious risk for pupils and teachers alike.
This truly desperate situation for the education of the Greek Orthodox Community was resolved by the Ephorate with the support of the Financial Committee, who undertook to rebuild the School anew. The fund raising was satisfactory but not as planned, up to the moment when Christakis Zografos spontaneously sponsored 10,000 gold lira, an extraordinary amount at the time. It is worth noting that the fund raising up to that time had collected just 5000 lira and that parties offering the amount of 200 lira or more were given the title of Great Benefactors.
Following this exceptional offer, a splendid House of letters was built, named ZOGRAFEIO to honour the Great Benefactor and inaugurated on 19 September 1893, in the presence of His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Neophytus VIII. Since then it operated as six-grade High School (Lyceum) and produced the first (9) Lyceum graduates in 1899.
