“Then the dead die, when they are forgotten”.
We are pleased to announce that on 6 August 2015, on the feast day of the Cemetery Church of the Transfiguration in Sisli, our Community received from the relevant authorities, namely the Municipality of Sisli and the Monument Service, the official permit for the renovation of the church. The restoration-renovation works of the church started immediately, with an expected duration of about twenty (20) months and will be carried out by direct labour of out Community. The supervision of works will be performed by specialised professors from Greece, for free. The budget of the project amounts to eight hundred thousand Turkish lira (800,000 TL).
Our Community will provide the funds for the renovation. However, it is easily understood that any type of financial offer or support by other Communities, bodies and private entities will be gladly accepted. Besides, the Cemetery of Sisli may be lying at the border of the Greek Orthodox Community of Stavrodromi, but is a heritage and a living monument for the entire Greek-Rum Community. It is our duty to preserve our History and continue to honour the memory of our ancestors.
Besides, we firmly believe that... “then the dead die, when they are forgotten”.
